Abstract
Mucogingival surgery consists of plastic surgical procedures for the correction of gingivo-mucous membrane relationships that complicate periodontal disease and may interfere with the success of periodontal treatment.
Gingival graft of mucogingival surgery is much more technically demanding procedure requiring the periodontist to consider additional factors, Overlooking or failing to properly address a single one of theses factors factors can result in failure
of
gingival graft.
Two cases in a failure were selected for the present study.
One case was performed to widen the attached and keratinized gingiva, using free gingival graft and resulted in occurrence of ¡¯bound-down¡¯ mucosa between the old gingiva and the ¡¯graft¡¯.
Factors associated with this problem were that horizontal incision was located at mucogingival juction and it was butt-joint type.
The other case was performed to cover the root, using subepithelial connective tissue graft and resulted in survival of graft in 1 week postoperatively, but exfoliated with repack in 2 weeks postoperatively.
Factor associated with this problem was a trauma to the graft in exfoliation of repack.
The purpose of present study is to outline those factors that must be considered in gingival grafts.
